Knights lead 1A Wells Fargo Cup standings

Lake Norman Charter leads the way in the 1A standings for the Wells Fargo Cup, the N.C. High School Athletic Association announced.

The award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program, formerly known as the Wachovia Cup, is in its 33rd year.

Lake Norman Charter was atop the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference cup standings after winning boys’ and girls’ basketball titles. East Lincoln was second while North Lincoln came in third.

In the I-Meck 4A, conference championships in wrestling as well as in boys’ and girls’ swimming kept Hough on top of the league's conference cup standings after the winter sports season. Lake Norman was second with Mallard Creek close behind in third. North Mecklenburg was fourth followed by Mooresville and Hopewell.

Hough was tied for fourth in 4A.

The conference cup, presented by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes schools with the best overall athletic performances.

Here are the complete standings for all four classes (Lake Norman-area programs in bold):
