NCHSAA basketball playoff update (Feb. 28)

All six of the Lake Norman area teams that reached the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs moved on to their respective sectional finals.

Third-round game are scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.

NCHSAA basketball playoff update (Feb. 26)

Only seven of 17 Lake Norman-area teams moved beyond the first-round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association basketball playoffs on Monday.

In 4A, Hough's boys and North Mecklenburg's girls reached Wednesday's second round.

The Huskies, which defeated Vance 59-57 on a last-second Sanders Poff layup, will travel to McDowell, while the Lady Vikings will host Watauga.

Davidson Day players named all-state

Davidson Day's Maya Caldwell and Justin Jordan were named all-state by the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association.

Caldwell, an eighth-grader, averaged a double-double for the Lady Patriots, tallying 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game.

Jordan, a senior, led Davidson Day with 17.4 points and 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Wildcats, Huskies lead the way at 4A West wrestling regionals

Lake Norman and Hough combined to qualify 15 wrestlers  for the 4A state tournament at last weekend's 4A West regional.

The Wildcats were led by regional champions Conner Kominek (113 pounds) and Cody Karns (120). They will be joined by teammates Michael Ready (138), Eddie McGrail (145), Ryan Devlin (170), Matt Ready (195), Jackson Dowless (220) and Brendan Latham (285) at the 4A state tournament, which will take place Thursday-Saturday in Greensboro.

Four Huskies, Tanner Russ (138), Jake Efird (152), Palmer Maples (170) and Charles Smith (182), won regional championships. Three others, Austin Powell (106), Steven Owen (132) and Adam Nivens (145) also qualified for states.

Mooresville's Sam Crisp won the 106-pound regional championship. Jamie Wright (120), Kane Price (138), Jared Brooks (152) and Dontrez Patterson (182) also move on to states.

Hopewell's Gore Vaughn (182) as well as North Mecklenburg's Jalen Hill (132) and Marquel Thompson (170) also qualified for states.

At the 2A West regional, Bandys' Andrew Brotherton (170) and Anthony Christopher (195) won titles. Fellow Trojans Camron Crowe (138) and Zac Whisnant (220) will accompany them to states.

South Iredell’s Matthew Insogna (106), Jose Lopez (120), John Bustle (152) and Eythan Kramm (160) as well as East Lincoln’s James Daniel (126), Moses Boyter (145), Jeremy Tarleton (170) and Trenton Henderson (195) also made the cut for the 2A state tournament.

Lady Huskies fall in I-Meck tournament finals

Hough lost to Mallard Creek 47-45 in the I-Meck 4A girls' basketball tournament final on Friday. The Lady Huskies will have a rematch with the Mavericks today in the first round of the 4A playoffs. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m.

I-Meck 4A finals set

The I-Meck 4A basketball tournament finals are set.

No. 2 seed Hough will face No. 4 Mallard Creeek in the girls' finals, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at Lake Norman High.

The Mavericks upset the regular-season champion North Mecklenburg in Thursday's first semifinal, while the Huskies beat West Charlotte.

On the boys' side, West Charlotte will face third-seeded Vance, which knocked out No. 2 Hough Thursday night.

West Charlotte defeated fourth-seeded Mallard Creek in the semifinals.

Davidson Day falls in quarterfinals

Davidson Day's basketball teams failed to make it out of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association quarterfinals, which were held on Thursday at Charlotte Country Day.

The boys fell 55-46 to Gaston Day, which is the 2A tournament's second-seeded team.

The girls 66-34 to the top-seeded Carolina Day.

Wrestling regionals start Friday

The N.C. High School Athletic Association will hold its regional wrestling tournaments Friday and Saturday.

Regional hosts include: Hendersonville (1A West), Piedmont (2A Midwest), West Lincoln (2A West) and Hough (4A West).

Knights, Mustangs to play for SPC title

The Southern Piedmont 1A/2A boys' basketball tournament is set. Lake Norman Charter and East Lincoln won Wednesday night's semifinals to earn the shot for a tourney championship.

The girls' final had been decided on Tuesday. Lincolnton and Lake Norman Charter will face each other Friday at 6:30 for the tournament title.The boys' final will follow. Tip-off is expected at 8 p.m.

Davidson Day teams reach state quarterfinals

Both Davidson Day basketball teams won first-round games to reach the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A state quarterfinals, which will be held at Charlotte Country Day on Thursday.

The Lady Patriots, the tournament's No. 9 seed, defeated St. David's School and will face top-seeded Carolina Day School at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Davidson Day's boys, the seventh-seeded team in their tournament, outlasted Fayetteville Christian 59-58. The Patriots will face second-seeded Gaston Day at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Cannon's girls fell in the first-round of the 3A playoff, losing to fifth-seeded Charlotte Christian 60-45. The Cougars, the 12th-seed in the tournament, finish the season 11-15.

Roses leads Cannon at 3A swim meet

Cannon School's girls' swimming team was fourth at the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A swim meet on Monday in Greensboro.


The Lady Cougars were led by the 200-yard medley championship relay team of Diana Dale, Maija Roses, Darby West and Isabella Jacoby. The same quartet finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Roses, a junior, won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke state championships.

The Cannon boys placed 10th.

SouthLake Christian's boys, led by junior John Baker's runner-up finishes in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, were eighth, while the Lady Eagles tied for 17th-place.

SouthLake trio wins wrestling titles

Three SouthLake Christian wrestlers claimed individual state titles at last weekend's N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament.


State champions Hamilton Jones (147 pounds), Sam Bryant (162), Brian Jones (197) helped the Eagles to a third-place finish. Charlotte Latin and Providence Day were the top two finishers, respectively.

SouthLake's Dylan Boone (108), Adam Edwards (115), Gant Allen (184) were state runners-up in their weight classes.

NCISAA brackets released

Davidson Day's basketball teams will be the lone area representatives in the NCISAA 2A basketball playoffs.

The Patriots' boys, an seven-seed, will host Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday. The winner will play No. 2 Gaston Day at Charlotte Country Day on Thursday in the state semifinals.

Davidson Day's girls, a nine-seed, will travel to Raleigh Tuesday to face St. David's School. The winner will face No. 1 Carolina Day at Country Day on Thursday.

Both  finals are scheduled for Friday and will also be held at Country Day.

Cannon's girls, a 12th-seed in the 3A bracket, will play Charlotte Christian Tuesday. No. 4 Cary Academy awaits the winner. The 3A semifinals and finals will be held at Charlotte Latin.

The 1A/2A/3A independent schools' state swim meets are  scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Finals are slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

The Metrolina Athletic Conference announced its boys' and girls' all-conference basketball teams. Four SouthLake Christian players – Veronica Dzuik, Kianna Funderburk, Giselle Verville and Jalen Sanders –  were honored.

Huskies ousted in quarterfinals

Hough's wrestling team lost a close 34-31 match to Northwest Guilford in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A dual-team quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Huskies, the I-Meck 4A regular-season and tournament champions, end their season 25-3.

Hough will host the 4A West individual regional on Feb. 22-23. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for the state champion meet Feb. 28-March 2 in Greensboro.

Hough wrestling reaches quarterfinals

Hough made the most of its playoff debut Tuesday night.


The Huskies, the I-Meck 4A champions, beat South Meck 49-27 in the first round before escaping with a 32-31 win against Asheville Roberson to reach the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A dual-team state quarterfinals.

The area's other playoff team, Lake Norman, was ousted in the second round by undefeated Winston-Salem Parkland. The Wildcats won their first-round match against East Gaston 49-21.

Hough will travel to Southeast Guilford on Thursday to face Northwest Guilford. The winner will wrestle either Parkland or Southeast Guilford for a chance to compete in Saturday's state championship match.

Viking wins state indoor titles

North Mecklenburg's Sabrina Moore won the girls' long jump and 55-meter dash to lead the area at Saturday's indoor track championships.

Moore's Vikings were ninth at the 4A state meet. Lake Norman was 23rd.

On the boys' side, I-Meck schools Hopewell, North Meck and Vance tied for 20th place.

In the 1A/2A/3A meet, North Lincoln's boys were state runners-up. They were led by Andrew Fea and Joshua Mosteller, who finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,600 meters. On the girls' side, North Lincoln was eighth.

Lincoln Charter's Lappin among 1A/2A swim champs

Lincoln Charter's Christina Lappin won two events, the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, at the 1A/2A meet to lead area swimmers.

Lincoln Charter finished third among the girls followed by Lake Norman Charter at fourth. South Iredell was sixth while Pine Lake Prep, led by Alyssa Marsh's 100-yard backstroke championship, was ninth. East Lincoln finished 12th and Community School of Davidson was 25th.

Lake Norman Charter, which finished third among the boys, claimed a state title in the 200-yard medley relay (Chris Cardwell,  Drew Queen, Corrin Rothwell and Austin Jones). The 200-medley relay broke last year's Knight state record with a 1:38.52.

North Lincoln finished sixth in the boys' rankings while Lincoln Charter was 11th and CSD was 12th.

Lake Norman Charter divers Adyson Lowe and Nathan Lane defended their state championships. Teammate Erin Lee was third in the girls' event. Lane set a new 1A/2A state record with a score of 380.15.

Hough wins I-Meck wrestling tournament

After winning its first regular-season conference title, Hough solidified its position atop the I-Meck 4A by claiming its tournament championship on Saturday.

The Huskies, led by I-Meck champs Sebastian Barreto, Palmer Maples and Austin Newell, outlasted runner-up Lake Norman 204-186 to claim the title.

The Huskies also qualified for their first dual-team playoffs. Hough will host South Meck on Tuesday night in the first round. The winner will take on either Asheville Roberson or Porter Ridge that same night.

Lake Norman will travel to Winston-Salem Parkland to take on MEGA 7 4A champion East Gaston. The winner will take on either undefeated Parkland or wildcard Ardrey Kell.
