I-Meck announces basketball honors

North Mecklenburg's Shivaughn Wiggins and Hopewell's Sharee' Boyd were named the boys' and girls' basketball I-Meck Player of the Year, respectively.

Mallard Creek boys' basketball coach David Rutledge and Hopewell's girls' basketball coach Gary Richmond received I-Meck Coach of the Year honors.

Wiggins averaged 25 points a game to lead his Vikings to a 22-6 record on their way to second-place I-Meck finish, while Boyd, Hopewell's all-time leading scorer, averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals,  three assists and two blocks per game.

Wildcats earn I-Meck's Wachovia Conference Cup

After winning titles in baseball, girls' track, girls' soccer and softball, Lake Norman claimed the Wachovia Conference Cup for the I-Meck 4A this year. Mallard Creek secured second place after winning the I-Meck's boys' track and field title.

The Wachovia Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in their conference. According to the N.C. High School Athletic Association, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

I-Meck honors top boys' tennis players

The I-Meck 4A Conference announced its 2011 boys' tennis awards today.

Hough freshman Ryan Wydra claimed I-Meck boys' tennis Player of the Year honors after the Huskies No. 1 player went undefeated in conference play and won the I-Meck tournament singles title.

Hopewell coach Craig Smith, who's led his Titans to the state quarterfinals, was named conference coach of the year.

The I-Meck 4A softball tournament begins today. Higher seeds will host first round play, while the semifinals and finals will be held at Hough High.

Lake Norman (21-1, 13-1 in the I-Meck) and North Mecklenburg (19-3, 12-2) will be the top two conference seeds.

Husky wins I-Meck Conference golf title

Hough's David Sargent shot an 18-hole 74 to claim the I-Meck Conference boys' golf title Monday at Northstone Country Club in Huntersville.

Sargent as well as Conner Lewis, Mace Timberlake and Peyton White, who all shot 75s, led the Huskies to the I-Meck tournament championship. Hough finished the day with a tournament-low 299. Mallard Creek (324), North Mecklenburg (330), Mooresville (333) and Lake Norman (341) rounded out the top five. Hopewell finished sixth with a 383.

Other individuals who stood out, included Mallard Creek's Mac White (77), Mooresville's Luke Robbins (78) as well as North Meck's Danny Pizetoski and Phillip Parrish, who both shot 79s.

With the regular season coming to an end, Hough, Mooresville, Lake Norman and Mallard Creek qualified as teams to May 2's regionals. Pizetoski, Brandon Holst (Hopewell) and Seth Priester (North Meck) qualified as indivials. North Meck's Danny Flemming and David Barkley were tied for the last individual-qualifying spot and a tie-breaker will be determined to decide who will play at regionals.

No. 1 Hopewell falls

In a surprising upset Tuesday night, the undefeated top-ranked Hopewell boys fell in conference play to I-Meck foe Vance 56-52.

The Titans must now beat rival North Mecklenburg Thursday to win the conference outright.

Hopewell v. Lake Norman delayed again....

According to the Prep Insiders blog, the much-anticipated rematch between Hopewell and Lake Norman that was originally scheduled for Friday and was pushed to Monday after the snow has now been canceled again because of schools being closed today.

They have not announced a new date for the game.

Also affected is the Mallard Creek vs. Vance game in the I-Meck.

UPDATE: Hopewell will play Lake Norman and Mallard Creek will play Vance on Wednesday at 6. West Charlotte vs. Mooresville has been rescheduled to Friday at 6 p.m., all according to the Prep Insiders blog.

Hopewell (No. 1) and Lake Norman (No. 2) top the latest CarolinaPreps.com poll, while Vance sits at No. 9.

Wachovia Cup leaders

Wachovia Bank, a Wells Fargo company, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for fall sports in the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2009-10 academic year.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual
athletic conference.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

Here are how Lake Norman area teams are doing in their conferences.

Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference standings: East Lincoln 72, North Lincoln 62, Lincolnton 54, West Lincoln 42, Highland 35, Cherryville 16, Bessemer City 10, Challenger 8.

I-Meck 4A conference standings: Lake Norman 33.5, Mallard Creek 29.5, North Mecklenburg 29, Mooresville 27, Hopewell 23, Vance 14, West Charlotte 12.

Lake Norman teams well represented in Sweet 16

Lake Norman high schools have a very strong showing in the first regular season boys' Observer Sweet 16 poll released today.

Hopewell (8-0) is still on top and Lake Norman (5-0) moved up to second from fourth. Fellow I-Meck teams Vance (4-0) and West Charlotte (7-0) are third and fourth, respectively. North Mecklenburg (7-0) went from being unranked in the preseason to No. 8 this week.

Hopewell plays West Charlotte tonight while Lake Norman will take on North Mecklenburg.

East Lincoln made the biggest jump, moving to sixth after not being ranked in the preseason. The Mustangs open conference play at No. 10 Cherryville tonight.

In the girls' poll, Lake Norman (4-2) fell from 12th to 16th.
