Top seeds to meet for I-Meck volleyball title

Hough and Lake Norman, the No. 1 and 2 teams in the I-Meck 4A respectively this regular season, will meet again tonight in the conference tournament title match.

The Huskies defeated Hopewell 25-9, 25-7, 25-8 Tuesday night to move onto the championship. The Wildcats defeated Mallard Creek in a tight 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 27-25) in Tuesday's semifinal.

The I-Meck title game is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. at Hough High.

The Huskies have won both of this season's meetings with Lake Norman.

Tennis dual playoffs get under way

The first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls' tennis dual team playoffs was played Tuesday night. Only two of the six Lake Norman area teams that reached the postseason - Lake Norman Charter and Lake Norman High - moved on to the second round, which is scheduled to be played Oct. 23.

Knights win SPC golf title, Smith is Player of the Year

Lake Norman Charter claimed the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A girls' regular season golf title. The Knights' 829 total strokes put them 90 ahead of second-place East Lincoln (919).

The Mustangs' Brittany Smith was SPC Player of the Year, outlasting runner-up Maegan Ports from Lake Norman Charter with a 198. Ports finished the year with a 203.

North Lincoln finished third as a team with a 935.

Smith, Dueitt named to Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas

South Iredell's LaChaston Smith and Hough's Blake Dueitt were named to the North Carolina roster for the upcoming Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

The bowl, which features some of the top senior players in North and South Carolina, will be held at Spartanburg's Wofford College Dec. 15.

SouthLake volleyball players get all-state nod

After leading SouthLake Christian to the state 3A finals, Katie Schoenrock and Kayla Summer were named to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association all-state team.


The Eagles finished their first season at the 3A class with a school-record 27 wins, losing its lone game of the year to eight-time consecutive champ Charlotte Latin in the state title game.


This is the second year that Schoenrock and Summer have earned all-state honors. Last season the duo earned the recognition after leading SouthLake to the 2A state championship.


Davidson Day's Jessi Harris was named to the 2A all-state team.

NCISAA

SouthLake Christian wrapped up its season Saturday, losing its first match of the year in the 3A state championship game against Charlotte Latin, which won its eighth consecutive state title. The Eagles finished the year with a 27-1 record.

Cross country

The NCHSAA regionals were held Saturday. Lake Norman Charter and North Lincoln had a good weekend, winning both the girls' and boys' West regional titles in the 1A and 2A classes, respectively.


The Knight boys were led by Michael Westbay and Jordan Wallace, who finished third and fourth respectively in the race. On the girls' side, Sarah Hardin won the regional title with a time of 20:18, while Stephanie Zaino finished second in the race.


North Lincoln's boys were led by regional champion Chris Boyle and Andrew Fea, who finished second., while Savannah Fornshell's second-place finish led the girls. East Lincoln finished second in the boys' side and fourth in the girls' standings.


At the 4A regional races, Lake Norman and Mooresville finished sixth and seventh in the boys' standings, while Hough finished 10th, Hopewell 17th and North Mecklenburg 18th.The Wildcats' girls led local teams, finishing sixth, while Hough was ninth. North Meck was 14th, Mooresville 15th and Hopewell 16th.

NCISAA

The NCISAA state championships were held this weekend. Davidson Day's girls had the best outcome, finishing secon at the event. They were led by Melissa Zammitti, who was fourth in the race, and Rachel Bringewatt, who was eighth. The Patriot boys  finished sixth at the event. SouthLake was 14th in the girls' side and 16th in the boys' standings at the 2A races.

Patriots, Eagles earn volleyball playoff berths

Davidson Day and SouthLake Christian earned spots in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association volleyball playoffs.

Davidson Day is the 2A tournament's No. 6 seed after going 13-3 this season. The Patriots will host No. 11 seed Halifax Academy, which comes into the tournament with a 13-7 record.

SouthLake has a first-round bye after earning the No. 2 seed in the 3A tournament. The undefeated Eagles (25-0) will host the winner of the game between No. 7 Covenant Day (17-8) and No. 10 Forsyth Country Day (12-6).

NCISAA boys' soccer
The lone Lake Norman-area soccer team in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association boys' soccer playoffs, Davidson Day, fell in the first round of play in the 2A bracket. The Patriots, the SPAA conference champions and theh tournament's No. 10 seed, lost to No. 7 Caldwell Academy 4-1 Friday.

Volleyball playoffs begin Saturday

The N.C. High School Athletic Association released its volleyball playoff brackets Thursday. First round of play begins Saturday.

Several Lake Norman-area squads made the postseason.

Lake Norman Charter, which was undefeated in its first season in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A, claimed a No. 1 seed in the 1A playoffs, while Hough claimed a top seed in the 4A brackets after outlasting I-Meck co-champions Lake Norman in five sets 25-14, 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10.

North Meck falls short in state semifinal

The North Mecklenburg Vikings powered through the first four rounds of the playoffs and looked poised to have a shot at their first state championship. But the Vikings fell one game short, losing to Ardrey Kell in the state semifinals 3-2 (21-25, 25-13, 25-15, 19-25, 8-15).

After losing a close first game, North Meck came back strong with commanding wins in the second and third games. But, in the end, Ardrey Kell was able to overpower them and earn a spot in their first state championship game.

Cooke had 22 kills, 11 digs and three blocks for the Vikings, and Sarah Weise had 16 kills and served seven aces. Atkinson, who was sidelined midway through the fifth game with a knee injury, had 39 assists.

North Meck finished the season 25-3. Ardrey Kell is now 24-5 and will face Greenville Rose in the championship match.

Volleyball: North Meck beats Hopewell in 4th round of playoffs

Cross-town rivals North Mecklenburg and Hopewell met for the fourth time this season Saturday in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. North Meck won the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-20) and move on to the semifinals, where they will face Ardrey Kell.

Hopewell won the last match between the two in the I-Meck conference finals.

Ali Cooke led the Vikings with 16 kills and 21 digs. Blair Atkinson had 10 digs and 31 assists.

Playoff update: Oct. 28

Hopewell and North Mecklenburg both advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA volleyball tournament with wins against Lake Norman and Mallard Creek respectively. The wins set up the interesting possibility of yet another rivalry match between the two teams in the fourth round of the tournament on Saturday.

Cannon School won 4-3 over North Raleigh Christian in the NCISAA 3A boys soccer tournament.

The Cannon volleyball team fell short in the NCISAA tournament against Wesleyan Christian, losing in three straight.

Playoff update: Oct. 27

North Mecklenburg plays Mallard Creek and Hopewell takes on Lake Norman in the second round of the NCHSAA 4A state volleyball playoffs tonight. East Lincoln volleyball is in the second round of the 2A tournament, where they will take on Piedmont.

Southlake Christian faces Calvary Baptist in the NCISAA 2A volleyball championships and Cannon School takes on Wesleyan in the 3A championships tonight.

In the NCISAA 3A boys soccer tournament, Cannon plays North Raleigh Christian.

Volleyball State Tournament: first round

The first round of the NCHSAA volleyball 4A state tournament was Saturday. Both North Mecklenburg and Hopewell dominated their first round matches and move on to the second round Tuesday.

North Mecklenburg beat Butler 25-24, 25-20 and 25-16 with Ali Cooke leading the team with 11 kills and 14 digs. The Vikings will face another fellow I-Meck school Mallard Creek in the second round. North Meck beat Mallard Creek in three games in both of their previous matches this season.

Hopewell dominated Sun Valley in three games, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-6. They will also face a I-Meck conference foe, Lake Norman, in the second round. Hopewell won both preseason matches against Lake Norman.
