North Meck looks to learn from loss

North Mecklenburg's girls' basketball team fell to Porter Ridge 67-46 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4A western regional semifinals Friday night.

The Lady Vikings were outscored 14-4 in the opening four minutes of the game and couldn't crawl out of the hole. The I-Meck 4A regular-season champions finished their year 26-4.

"It doesn't diminish what we accomplished this year and the fact that we made that big turnaround from the year before and since I got there," said fourth-year North Meck coach Jennifer Baker.

Junior Destiny Barrino and sophomore reserve Jaydah Hayden led North Meck in scoring against the Pirates, tallying 14 points each.

Although the Vikings lose four seniors, Kelly Beasley, Jasmine Bullock, Jasmine Cash and Kelsey Ellison, Baker hopes the rest of her team learns from the program's first trip to regionals since 2008.

"You're dealing with a lot of kids who had never been here before. ... Now they know what it feels like," she said. "Hopefully, when they're presented with the challenge again, they'll step up and knock their opponent down."

With Barrino, whose 12 points per game led the team, slated to return alongside with fellow junior Brianna Jones and other young players, Baker hopes her team can carry this year's success onward.

"Our future looks bright," she said.

Huskies ousted by Olympic

Hough's run in the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4A playoffs ended Thursday night, as the Huskies fell to nationally-ranked Olympic 75-55 in the regional semifinals.

Despite early foul trouble, sophomore Luke Maye led the Huskies with another double-double - 14 points and 10 rebounds. Drexler Clark had 11, while Theo Mack added 9.

The third-year Huskies finish their year 23-6.

North Meck's girls play tonight

Lake Norman-area teams haven't had much success this week, with Bandys' and Lake Norman Charters' girls as well as Hough's boys losing in their respective regional semifinals.

But North Mecklenburg's girls' basketball team will look to change that tonight. The Lady Vikings will face Porter Ridge at 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center for a chance to play in the 4A semifinals Saturday night.

Bandys ends season

Bandys' girls' basketball team fell to Pisgah 57-45 in Wednesday's N.C. High School Athletic Association's 2A regional semifinals to end its season.

The Lady Trojans had 18 points from Madi Story and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Sarah Goble, but that wasn't enough to overcome Pisgah.

Bandys finishes its year 27-3.

Knights end their season

Lake Norman Charter's girls' basketball team lost to Bishop McGuinness 82-63 at Tuesday night's 1A West regional semifinals in Greensboro to end its season.

The Knights finished the year 23-6.

NCHSAA basketball playoff update (Feb. 26)

Only seven of 17 Lake Norman-area teams moved beyond the first-round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association basketball playoffs on Monday.

In 4A, Hough's boys and North Mecklenburg's girls reached Wednesday's second round.

The Huskies, which defeated Vance 59-57 on a last-second Sanders Poff layup, will travel to McDowell, while the Lady Vikings will host Watauga.

Davidson Day players named all-state

Davidson Day's Maya Caldwell and Justin Jordan were named all-state by the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association.

Caldwell, an eighth-grader, averaged a double-double for the Lady Patriots, tallying 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game.

Jordan, a senior, led Davidson Day with 17.4 points and 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Wildcats, Huskies lead the way at 4A West wrestling regionals

Lake Norman and Hough combined to qualify 15 wrestlers  for the 4A state tournament at last weekend's 4A West regional.

The Wildcats were led by regional champions Conner Kominek (113 pounds) and Cody Karns (120). They will be joined by teammates Michael Ready (138), Eddie McGrail (145), Ryan Devlin (170), Matt Ready (195), Jackson Dowless (220) and Brendan Latham (285) at the 4A state tournament, which will take place Thursday-Saturday in Greensboro.

Four Huskies, Tanner Russ (138), Jake Efird (152), Palmer Maples (170) and Charles Smith (182), won regional championships. Three others, Austin Powell (106), Steven Owen (132) and Adam Nivens (145) also qualified for states.

Mooresville's Sam Crisp won the 106-pound regional championship. Jamie Wright (120), Kane Price (138), Jared Brooks (152) and Dontrez Patterson (182) also move on to states.

Hopewell's Gore Vaughn (182) as well as North Mecklenburg's Jalen Hill (132) and Marquel Thompson (170) also qualified for states.

At the 2A West regional, Bandys' Andrew Brotherton (170) and Anthony Christopher (195) won titles. Fellow Trojans Camron Crowe (138) and Zac Whisnant (220) will accompany them to states.

South Iredell’s Matthew Insogna (106), Jose Lopez (120), John Bustle (152) and Eythan Kramm (160) as well as East Lincoln’s James Daniel (126), Moses Boyter (145), Jeremy Tarleton (170) and Trenton Henderson (195) also made the cut for the 2A state tournament.

Lady Huskies fall in I-Meck tournament finals

Hough lost to Mallard Creek 47-45 in the I-Meck 4A girls' basketball tournament final on Friday. The Lady Huskies will have a rematch with the Mavericks today in the first round of the 4A playoffs. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m.

I-Meck 4A finals set

The I-Meck 4A basketball tournament finals are set.

No. 2 seed Hough will face No. 4 Mallard Creeek in the girls' finals, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at Lake Norman High.

The Mavericks upset the regular-season champion North Mecklenburg in Thursday's first semifinal, while the Huskies beat West Charlotte.

On the boys' side, West Charlotte will face third-seeded Vance, which knocked out No. 2 Hough Thursday night.

West Charlotte defeated fourth-seeded Mallard Creek in the semifinals.

Davidson Day falls in quarterfinals

Davidson Day's basketball teams failed to make it out of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association quarterfinals, which were held on Thursday at Charlotte Country Day.

The boys fell 55-46 to Gaston Day, which is the 2A tournament's second-seeded team.

The girls 66-34 to the top-seeded Carolina Day.

Wrestling regionals start Friday

The N.C. High School Athletic Association will hold its regional wrestling tournaments Friday and Saturday.

Regional hosts include: Hendersonville (1A West), Piedmont (2A Midwest), West Lincoln (2A West) and Hough (4A West).

Huskies ousted in quarterfinals

Hough's wrestling team lost a close 34-31 match to Northwest Guilford in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A dual-team quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Huskies, the I-Meck 4A regular-season and tournament champions, end their season 25-3.

Hough will host the 4A West individual regional on Feb. 22-23. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for the state champion meet Feb. 28-March 2 in Greensboro.

Hough wrestling reaches quarterfinals

Hough made the most of its playoff debut Tuesday night.

The Huskies, the I-Meck 4A champions, beat South Meck 49-27 in the first round before escaping with a 32-31 win against Asheville Roberson to reach the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A dual-team state quarterfinals.

The area's other playoff team, Lake Norman, was ousted in the second round by undefeated Winston-Salem Parkland. The Wildcats won their first-round match against East Gaston 49-21.

Hough will travel to Southeast Guilford on Thursday to face Northwest Guilford. The winner will wrestle either Parkland or Southeast Guilford for a chance to compete in Saturday's state championship match.

Top seeds to meet for I-Meck volleyball title

Hough and Lake Norman, the No. 1 and 2 teams in the I-Meck 4A respectively this regular season, will meet again tonight in the conference tournament title match.

The Huskies defeated Hopewell 25-9, 25-7, 25-8 Tuesday night to move onto the championship. The Wildcats defeated Mallard Creek in a tight 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 27-25) in Tuesday's semifinal.

The I-Meck title game is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. at Hough High.

The Huskies have won both of this season's meetings with Lake Norman.

Tennis dual playoffs get under way

The first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls' tennis dual team playoffs was played Tuesday night. Only two of the six Lake Norman area teams that reached the postseason - Lake Norman Charter and Lake Norman High - moved on to the second round, which is scheduled to be played Oct. 23.

Knights win SPC golf title, Smith is Player of the Year

Lake Norman Charter claimed the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A girls' regular season golf title. The Knights' 829 total strokes put them 90 ahead of second-place East Lincoln (919).

The Mustangs' Brittany Smith was SPC Player of the Year, outlasting runner-up Maegan Ports from Lake Norman Charter with a 198. Ports finished the year with a 203.

North Lincoln finished third as a team with a 935.

Hough reaches state baseball semifinals

In only its second year as a program, Hough will play in the 4A regional finals after defeating I-Meck foe Mallard Creek 4-2 in the fourth round of the playoffs Wednesday.

With the game being postponed because of storms Tuesday night, the Huskies (21-10) were able to bring ace pitcher Brandon Gragilla onto the mound.

Despite being on short rest, having pitched against South Caldwell Friday, the 6-foot-5 junior left-hander, who’s 11-1 for the year, had another strong performance.

“He wanted it tonight,” said Hough coach Jimmy Cochran. “He did what he’s done all year for us.”

But Gragilla had a slow start, allowing the first Maverick batter he faced in the game, Jamel Harbison, to lead off with a triple. After the Huskies got the next two batters out, Kyle Bynum drove in Harbison to get Mallard Creek (20-9) the early 1-0 lead.

But Hough answered in its next outing, as A.J. Girting, who reached first on a walk to start the second inning, was driven in by a Nick Daddio single to tie the game.

In the top of third, the Huskies got the lead when Jared Sobo scored off a Johnny Piedmonte sacrifice fly. Daddio would go on to again score Girting.

Mallard Creek’s David Folk scored in the bottom of the inning, but Hough would add to its buffer in the fourth, when Eric Siler reached home off a Maverick error at first base.

Gragilla, whose only lost of the year came against the Mavericks, was glad to get the key win.

“It’s a great accomplishment to get this far,” he said. “Our team has done a good job. It feels good.”

Hough will face East Forsyth in the best-of-three, home-and-away state semifinal series, which begins Thursday.

“It’s amazing,” said Cochran. “I’m happy beyond belief for my guys. Last year we struggled and it wasn’t really a fun experience for our guys, but they stuck it out and came back hungry. It’s paid off.”

Lake Norman to play for lacrosse title Friday night

Lake Norman's boys' lacrosse team will face Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons at 7:30 p.m. in Cary for the state championship.

The Wildcats, which defeated Myers Park 13-7 Wednesday, go into the title game with a 22-0 record. Cardinal Gibbons is also undefeated this season with a 20-0 mark.

Lake Norman has outscored its opponents 350-76 this year.

Two Lincoln County athletes claim state titles

East Lincoln's Marcus "Bubba" McDowell and North Lincoln's Allie Castro both won individual state championships at last weekend's 2A track and field meet.

McDowell, a senior, won the 400-meter title with a 48.72. Castro's 11:18.62 time in the 3,200 meters allowed her to claim her state title. She was more than eight seconds faster than the state runner-up.

North Lincoln's Andrew Fea was second in the 1,600 meter run with a 4:27.80, while Ryan Shannon was third in the 3,200 meters (9:54.30).

Lake Norman Charter participated in the 1A state meet, where they were led by Stephanie Zaino's third place finish in the 3,200 meters as well as the boys' 4x800 meter relay team (Michael Westbay, Nathan Farber, Stephen Hack, Chris Hack) that finished as state runner-up. South Iredell tennis player is state runner-up

South Iredell’s Patrick Hensley had a good weekend at the 2A boys’ tennis state championships, winning three matches to reach the state final match.

Hensley, a senior, defeated Central Davidson’s Levi Bruff 6-3, 6-1 in the first round before coming back from behind to beat Hillsborough Cedar Ridge’s Zac Marion 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

On the second day of the tournament, Hensley defeated Eben Wells (Kill Devil Hills First Flight) 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinal before losing to Salisbury freshman Michael Ogden 6-4, 6-0 for the state championship.

Hensley was state runner-up for a second year in a row.

Other Lake Norman area players didn't fare as well.

Jake Combs (Mooresville) dropped his first-round match 6-1, 6-0 to Greensboro Page’s Austin Ansari, while Greensboro Grimsley’s Will Albright and Graham Pearson defeated Ryan Wydra-Collin Black (Hough) 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of doubles play.

Boys' lacrosse

Lake Norman's 18-3 win against Greensboro Grimsley Friday will send the Wildcats to the state semifinals against Myers Park.

Lake Norman (21-0) will host the Mustangs (17-3) Tuesday night. The winner of that  game will play for a state championship against either Raleigh Athens Drive or Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons.

Girls' lacrosse

Lake Norman dropped a 16-7 game to Marvin Ridge in the state quarterfinals Friday to end their quest for a state championship.

The Lady Wildcats finished the year 13-6 after being runners-up in Conference 7 to Myers Park, which dropped the other western quarterfinal to Charlotte Catholic. For a bracket, go here.

Girls' soccer playoffs announced

Several area teams made the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff brackets, which were released Monday. First-round games are slated to be played Wednesday.

Hough, the I-Meck champions after going 20-0-1 in the regular season, will host South Mecklenburg in 4A tournament. No. 2 Lake Norman (19-2) will play Porter Ridge at home, while No. 4 Mooresville (9-9-2) and No. 5 Hopewell (7-11-2) will travel to Asheville T.C. Roberson and Sun Valley, respectively.

In 2A, the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A will have East Lincoln (13-6-3) and North Lincoln (9-8-1) as its representatives. They will host East Burke and Wheatmore, respectively.

South Iredell, the Catawba Valley champions after an 18-2 season, will host East Davidson, while Bandys (15-3-3) will travel to Sylva Smoky Mountain.

Lake Norman Charter (17-1) will be the No. 1 seed out of the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A in the 1A bracket. The Knights will host Lincoln Charter (11-5-2) Wednesday.

Lacrosse playoff brackets released

The boys' and girls' lacrosse championship brackets were released Wednesday by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

On the boys' side, Lake Norman and Lake Norman Charter reached the playoffs from Conference 10.

The Wildcats, the conference champions, will host Providence Friday. Lake Norman has started the year with an 18-0 record.

Lake Norman Charter, the conference runners-up, will travel to Morganton Patton Friday. The Knights finished the regular season with a 13-5 record.

Lake Norman and Hough, the No. 2 and 3 seeds out of Conference 7 respectively, are the lone area qualifiers in the girls' championships.

The Lady Huskies (10-5) will travel to Marvin Ridge, while the Wildcats  host Northwest Guilford  for first-round action Friday.

Myers Park, the Conference 7 champions, have a first-round bye.
